Modern Sustainable Home Design at Bird Island, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

September 7, 2010 |12:08 | Gossips  By : Team X

You might say this zero-energy house in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is for the birds. Designed by the architects of Berlin-based Graft Lab, their modern, sustainable Bird Island  design is a striking urban renewal project composed of an eco-friendly bamboo frame wrapped in an sustainably sourced silicone glass fabric which lets the structure sway with the wind, while giving residents a unique and constantly changing bird’s-eye view of the sky. Apart from looking totally cool, this modern tented structure reflects sunlight and prevents heat absorption to interiors, passively keeping living quarters comfortable. A grey-water recycling system allows for eco-conscious water use and reuse. Bird Island was designed as part of the YTL Green Homes Competition, which challenged eight international architects and designers to put their keenest, Greenest ideas into action.

Living it up on an island

Fiji and Rarotonga seem to be the Pacific Islands of choice for those wanting sun and surf, but after a recent holiday in Tonga, I would argue it deserves a second look. As well as an endless supply of tropical temperatures and beautiful scenery, the country offers a chance to experience a unique lifestyle, cuisine and people.

Living it up on an island

Arriving in Tongatapu late at night, our group had our first taste of the informal nature of Tonga as we negotiated customs - two or three smiling security personnel who glanced briefly at our bags as we passed through a rundown room on our way to the taxi area.

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a British overseas territory, located in the north of the Caribbean Sea to the east of both Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. They are part of the Leeward Island chain. The approximate co-ordinates are 18° 20' N 64° 40' W. The archipelago of the Virgin Islands archipelago is made up of the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

The British Virgin Islands enjoy a sub-tropical climate, moderated by the trade winds. Temperatures remain fairly steady year round with a daily maximum of around 29°C in the summer and 25°C in the winter. The BVI averages about 115 cm of rain per year, although this is higher in the hills and coast is drier. The wettest months are September through to December. The British Virgin Islands are in an area that can see hurricanes from June to October and this effectively limits the sailing season to November - May.

Islands of India – a Bevy of Beauties

September 2, 2010 |14:00 | Gossips  By : Team X

An island is a piece of land completely surrounded by water. Above high tide and isolated from other significant landmasses, islands of India have emergent land features. There are two main types of islands i.e., continental islands and oceanic islands. Continental islands are bodies of land that lie on the continental shelf of a continent. On the other hand, an oceanic island is one that does not sit on continental shelves. This type of island is volcanic in origin. However, a group of geographically related islands is called an archipelago. India has two major offshore island possessions i.e., the Lashadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Mozambique: Earth at its most raw and beautiful

August 9, 2010 |12:30 | Destination Guide | Gossips  By : Team X

As I wandered about Beira in a culture-shocked daze, little beads of sweat wiggling down my forehead in the muggy heat, I heard my name ring out from across the street. Miss Lisa, Miss Lisa," cried a worried-looking woman hurrying towards me. "You mustn't be here. This road is very bad. It's not safe for you."

Mozambique Earth at its most raw and beautiful

I had only arrived in Mozambique's second city a few hours before and at first didn't recognise the woman. Then I realised: it was Octavia, the receptionist in my hotel. "Down that passage," she said, pointing over the road to a cavernous space beneath a bullet-marked high-rise concrete slum. "It is not good. Very bad people here. I think it's better you go back now."

10 vacations for solo travelers

August 2, 2010 |13:41 | Gossips  By : Team X

Whether by necessity or choice, a quarter of Americans take at least one vacation by themselves each year. Some solo travelers are single. Some have partners who dislike travel or have different interests or can't get away. Some just crave freedom.

But all face the same question: What's the best trip for the person traveling alone? "The key is to know yourself," said Beth Whitman, author of a guide for women traveling alone and founder of Wanderlustandlipstick.com, a website devoted to advice and tours for women on the go.  "There are times when you just need to get away, to recuperate. And then there are times when you want to be with a group. "If you just had a breakup, you don't want to run off to Paris because everyone is kissing."

Voyage through the Galapagos Islands

July 8, 2010 |12:25 | Gossips  By : Team X

Carrying my snorkel gear and a travel book with a picture of an iguana on the cover, I was ready to go on the vacation of my dreams to the Galápagos Islands. But my dream was interrupted.

At the airline's check in desk, my husband was told he could not go to Ecuador because the country requires that travelers have a passport valid for six more months. His passport was only valid for another four months.

"I'm never going to see that lizard," my husband said as he looked at my guide book. I had planned the trip for months and never heard of this rule. I had called the Ecuadorian consulate office in Houston to make sure we didn't need a visa.
